In Ukraine, 28 thousand obelisks under the red star may be demolished
What to do with tens of thousands of Ukrainian obelisks and mass graves bearing communist symbols?
This question was asked at a press conference in Kyiv by the famous Ukrainian historian, director of the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, academician Pyotr Tolochko, commenting on the anti-communist law adopted by the Verkhovna Rada, which provides for the ban on relevant symbols.

“Across Ukraine there are 28 thousand obelisks and mass graves where the dead are buried or mentioned,” the scientist cited the figure. “They are all under the red star, under the Soviet symbols with which they went into battle and died. And what to do with these obelisks today? We know that in Western Ukraine they are gradually being destroyed. But it is not the obelisks that are being destroyed, but the foundation of our Ukrainian existence. This is tearing society apart. For some, this is absolutely unacceptable, on the one hand, and for others, it is unacceptable, on the other hand. But you can’t break another part of Ukraine like this for the sake of one part of Ukraine.”
