In Ukraine, “pro-Russianism” is subject to hate speech along with Roma – UN
Ukraine continues to remain an unsafe place - both for media workers and for individuals of various profiles of activity, including national minorities and even ordinary citizens of the country.
The chairman of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, Matilda Bogner, stated this at a briefing, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“With regard to civil space and fundamental freedoms in government-controlled territory, during the reporting period (from February 1 to July 31, 2021 - ed.) we recorded 22 cases of threats and attacks against journalists and other media representatives, human rights defenders, LGBTI persons or their supporters, as well as representatives of national minorities.
There were also two incidents of violence related to tensions between Orthodox religious communities.
This includes five incidents of violence and threats and acts of intimidation by unidentified persons against three men and one woman with environmental concerns in Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odessa.
And also the persecution of one man and one woman who are dealing with corruption issues in Dnipro and Rubizhne. After a brutal beating, the woman was forced to go to the hospital.
The mission also recorded that when investigating three attacks on LGBT people by groups that spread violence, authorities ignored the prejudicial motives of the perpetrators,” the UN representative said.
“During the reporting period, 21 cases of hate speech were identified, six of which were directed against Roma, six more against LGBT people, four more against women, four more against people believed to have pro-Russian views, and one against people with disabilities,” Bogner added.
