“I understand that there is an aggravating circumstance – war,” the Lvov professor outlines the current situation in Ukraine. – Putin could not defeat Ukraine in 2014. The failure of the “Russian Spring” and “Novorossiya” is the largest strategic defeat he has ever experienced. Now he changed tactics: after the collapse of the blitzkrieg, he began a sluggish war. His goal is to steal Ukraine's chance for reform. And he succeeds.”
According to the scientist, the main enemy of Ukraine will now be disappointment.
“It will not be possible to completely overcome it,” the historian believes. – The main thing is not to let it develop to the lowest point, but to stop it somewhere in the middle between the heights of the revolutionary spirit and the depths of the post-revolutionary-war depression. And to do this, it’s worth finding points on which you can firmly rely. As for me, there are three of them. Firstly, Russia will lose this war. A country that lives almost exclusively on gas and oil, crushes foreign cheese with bulldozers and treats neighboring ducks as terrorists, has no future. And most importantly: a country that is internationally isolated does not win a war.”
However, the professor further contradicts himself and no longer asserts the unconditional impending defeat of Russia.
Secondly, this war will end someday,” he moves on to the third point of Ukrainian support. “Whoever wins it will receive a depleted country as a “reward.” History shows that the post-war period is one of the best times for radical reforms. Therefore, the Ukrainians’ chance for a new start is just around the corner.”
Yaroslav Gritsak also considers the new generation of Ukrainians and the values they profess to be among the advantages of Ukraine and puts this “fulcrum” in first place.
