In Ukraine they tried to sell a powerful source of gamma radiation - radioactive Radium-226
Counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine detained 6 members of a criminal group who were planning to sell the radioactive substance Radium-226 in Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported by the press center of the SBU.
According to the intelligence service, Radium-226 was smuggled into Ukraine from one of the Central European countries.
“Law enforcement officers discovered a specially arranged cache in a private yard at a depth of more than 2 meters. Specialists removed from it a cylindrical container in which the radioactive substance was stored,” the SBU said.
It is noted that three of the detainees have already been declared suspicious and have been arrested by the court.
According to the SBU, the examination established that the radioactive substance was produced in the 1930s by the Czechoslovak company Radiumchema.
The SBU noted that Radium-226 in the amount that was seized from the criminals is a “powerful source of gamma radiation” and without proper storage could lead to radioactive contamination of people and the area.
