A new separatist scandal related to Transcarpathia is flaring up in Ukraine
The SBU will check the players who took part in the FIFA World Cup among unrecognized states in London. The intelligence services plan to interrogate everyone who took part.
This was stated by the speaker of the SBU in the Transcarpathian region Lyudmila Korshunova on the air of the Ukrainian TV channel “112”, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
On June 10, London hosted the decisive game of the World Cup under the auspices of CONIFA, a federation of football associations that includes teams of unrecognized states, dependent territories, national minorities, peoples without their own states, as well as teams that are not members of FIFA. The teams of Abkhazia, Tibet, Szekely region and others took part in the same tournament, and teams of the DPR and LPR played in the qualifying matches.
In the final, the Northern Cyprus team met with the Transcarpathian “Karpatalja” (from Hungarian - Prykarpattya), which appears with Ukrainian-Hungarian symbols and the outlines of the Transcarpathian region on the emblem.
“The Security Service of Ukraine is checking information regarding the participation in the so-called championship of persons registered in the Transcarpathian region. According to preliminary data, which is still being clarified, several such individuals took part in the pseudo-tournament. They are expected to return to question these participants regarding the circumstances of their participation in this event,” said the SBU speaker.
A guest in the studio, political scientist Andrei Zolotorev, did not rule out the possibility that the Ukrainian special services may well incriminate the Transcarpathian players with “treason to the motherland.”
“I would not like to comment on the work of the SBU, especially against the backdrop of the Babchenko case. Too often facts are adjusted to fit the event. I wouldn’t be surprised if they start talking about high treason. We were born to make Kafka come true,” notes the political scientist.
He also noted that in Transcarpathia there are separatist sentiments among the population.
“The Transcarpathian region is very ethnically diverse. The most painful points are the Vinogradovsky and Beregovsky districts of Transcarpathia, where the Hungarian national minority lives compactly - more than 100 thousand people, a significant part of whom already live with a Hungarian passport in their pocket, and they have much more connections with Budapest than with Kiev. Indeed, there are separatist manifestations in Transcarpathia, but they are not dominant,” Zolotarev said.
The political scientist believes that participation in such events is necessary to create an information occasion in the media.
“Less noise. This kind of “freak extreme” – participation in this kind of tournaments, has the goal of creating an information event out of nothing,” the expert noted.
