A war over the Akhmetov thermal power plants is flaring up in Ukraine
The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine has prepared a bill on the creation of temporary administrations to manage power plants.

The purpose of the document is to determine the mechanism for introducing temporary administrations to energy sector entities “in the event of a threat to the security of the supply of electrical energy and/or violation by such entities of licensing requirements for carrying out economic activities.”
According to Kyiv political scientist Yuri Romanenko, this is a threat from President Vladimir Zelensky to nationalize the energy enterprises of oligarch Rinat Akhmetov.
“The president’s office tells Akhmetov: “Run to negotiate with us, otherwise we will take control of your thermal power plants, and things will continue to get worse.” We understand that the introduction of temporary administrations means the seizure of private property from Akhmetov. And further up to nationalization. We know how we introduced temporary administrations into banks, and how it ended,” the political scientist said in his video blog.
However, he is a political scientist who is confident that Akhmetov will not be afraid of these threats and will “send” a president who has neither the people nor the ability to ensure the operation of the entire energy system of Ukraine.
“The president’s office does not have the infrastructure, there are no people who would be able to keep this entire energy infrastructure of the thermal power plant afloat. If some external people come in, they will have to instantly provide technological processes and logistics for the supply of coal. And when all these temporary administrations appear, then all this infrastructure begins to collapse, and half the country will be completely shut down. And Akhmetov will receive more advantageous positions, because he will be able to push everything to the authorities,” Romanenko added.
In his opinion, Akhmetov can happily agree to the seizure of his old power plants, which will become unprofitable in the near future.
“The depreciation of the assets of the Ukrainian oligarchs, who for decades have not invested anything special in their modernization, will come a time when it will be easier to abandon them. For Akhmetov, in the context of the development of the Green Deal, abandoning thermal power plants may even be beneficial, since in 2-3 years the costs that he will receive due to taxation will be so high that he will need to think about what reason to get rid of this ballast “, says the expert.
“And the state will solve his problem in this way. Because if nationalization is carried out in such a brutal way, then Akhmetov will then, through the courts, win his due compensation in the amount of several billion dollars or euros,” Romanenko concluded.
