A scandal erupted in Ukraine over the requirement for women to march in heels
Verkhovna Rada deputies from Petro Poroshenko’s party presented women’s shoes to Defense Minister Andriy Taran today during the “hour of questions for the government.”
The reason was the minister's order obliging female military personnel to wear high-heeled shoes rather than army boots during the Independence Day parade of Ukraine. This is explained by aesthetic considerations, but caused a protest from factions oriented towards the West, where the struggle “against sexism”, etc. is popular.
Vice Speaker Elena Kondratyuk called the demand of the Minister of Defense a violation of the Constitution of Ukraine, which talks about equal rights and opportunities for men and women.
“We have been working for a very long time to ensure equal rights and opportunities for military women. Thanks to our efforts, many absurd restrictions on women’s military service and military education have been lifted. Following these changes, many women were inspired to join the armed forces. And how can you spoil this simple idea by holding a parade for the 30th anniversary of our independence, where female military personnel must walk in heels? Sorry, we saw this ferocious trash on the website of the Ministry of Defense. Mr. Minister of Defense, are you bringing our army closer to NATO standards? Consider this our open appeal to conduct an investigation and report to society who made such a decision, to report how much money was spent on purchasing these shoes from our taxes, and who will bear financial responsibility for this, to publicly apologize for such humiliation of women in front of the army and veterans who they defend the independence and sovereignty of our country with arms in hand,” said the vice speaker.
The “powderbots” began to unravel the scandal after photographs from the parade rehearsal appeared the day before, where girls were captured in high-heeled shoes.
After a flood of indignant comments, the Ministry of Defense was forced to close comments on the Facebook page with a photo report from the parade rehearsal.
