“The Shepetivka Repair Plant State Enterprise, which is part of the Ukroboronprom State Concern, used its own working capital to carry out a deep modernization of the 122-mm multiple launch rocket system, in the production of which only Ukrainian components are used. The new combat vehicle is called BM-21 UM “Berest” and is being demonstrated for the first time at the international exhibition “Arms and Security,” the report says.

According to Ukroboronprom, the Berest is intended to replace the BM-21 Grad, which is in service with the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The use of modern digital technologies and a new domestically produced chassis gives the Berest key combat and operational advantages that significantly expand the combat capabilities of the MLRS, the concern emphasized.

It is noted that one of the features of the new vehicle is a digital fire control system, which allows the crew, without leaving the cockpit, to prepare for firing, in particular, topographic geodetic reference. “New digital technologies integrate Berest into the information exchange system on the battlefield. Thanks to this, the MLRS crew receives in real time the exact coordinates of the enemy, which in processed form come from drones, counter-battery radar, and other surveillance systems. Such integration significantly increases the accuracy and efficiency of firing,” explained Ukroboronprom.

Another feature of the new MLRS is an increase in the power of a salvo to 50 rockets instead of 40 in the Grad, the concern added, emphasizing that the greater power makes it possible to guarantee the destruction of the enemy and quickly distribute fire between various targets.

Ukroboronprom also reported that the Berest is installed on a new chassis from KrAZ - 5401NE with a 4x4 wheel arrangement. The new chassis has an easy-to-use “cab-over-engine” layout and is equipped with a two-row 4-door cabin, which allows you to conveniently accommodate the crew and all the necessary fire control equipment.

In general, “Berest”, in comparison with “Grad”, has greater salvo power, firing accuracy, integration into digital artillery control and guidance systems, greater mobility and requires less time to open fire, the state concern noted.

“Given that all components for Berest were produced in Ukraine, we managed to significantly reduce its cost compared to analogues. A new and more effective system, if ordered, can completely replace the Grads, significantly expanding the combat capabilities of Ukrainian artillerymen,” concluded Ukroboronprom.
