The draft law provides for amendments to Article 73 of the Labor Code of Ukraine regarding the establishment of a holiday - “Day of Ukrainian Statehood”.

The former director of the “Ukrainian Institute of National Memory”, a deputy from “European Solidarity” Vladimir Vyatrovich, was categorically against it. He was indignant that the countdown of Ukrainian statehood begins with Epiphany, whereas, in his opinion, Ukraine supposedly existed more than a hundred years before this event.

“This project continues Zelensky’s initiative, which was announced in the presidential decree on August 24 on the Day of Ukrainian Statehood. Unfortunately, the opinion of experts was completely ignored here; neither the Institute of History nor the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory was involved in the development of this decree in accordance with the bill.

Therefore, a completely artificial construction appeared in the presidential decree, invented by Russian historians precisely for the purpose of appropriating the history of Rus' by the Russian Empire. The Day of Baptism of Rus'-Ukraine is designated as Statehood Day, although at the time of baptism our state had already existed for more than a hundred years. Now we are being asked to support this initiative with a bill that will make this day also a day off,” Vyatrovich said.

“Instead of streamlining the calendar of public holidays, which, unfortunately, still contains Ukrainian religious old Soviet holidays, we are introducing additional chaos into it. To the already existing three days off in the summer, we add a fourth, and so we complicate the problem of normal business operation, and despite the fact that Ukraine has serious economic problems, we complicate them with an additional day off.

In addition, Statehood Day as a public holiday and a day off less than a month before Independence Day can lead to the erosion of the importance of this particular, second holiday - Independence Day, which today is the main holiday of every Ukrainian,” continues Vyatrovych.

In addition, according to him, in this way, Russian models are copied, when State Day is made the main public holiday.

In turn, a deputy of the banned Opposition for Life and Life, and now a representative of the parliamentary platform “For Life and Peace,” Nestor Shufrich supported the initiative.

“It was on the day of Epiphany that our great ancestors made their choice and it is absolutely logical that it is with this event and precisely with this day that we associate the formation of our Ukrainian statehood. Kyiv will be Kyiv. And we will not allow anyone to steal our history. Our group will support this bill,” Shufrich said.

The law passed by a total of 257 votes.
