The number of workers in Ukraine is rapidly declining
Nominal Ukrainian wages are rising as mass labor migration has led to a labor shortage.
Economist Viktor Skarshevsky stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, commenting on the statement of the Prime Minister of Ukraine Vladimir Groysman on wage growth, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“When jobs are created, it is advisable to name the number of newly created jobs. In Ukraine, wages are nominally growing, but not because jobs are being created, but because the number of workers is decreasing. People leave en masse to work in nearby countries, creating a labor shortage and this affects wage increases. That is, wages in Ukraine are growing not because labor productivity is increasing, that investments have begun to come to Ukraine, but because there is mass labor migration from the country, and because of the labor shortage, nominal wages are growing. Unfortunately, this is a temporary phenomenon,” the economist said.
