There is a tourism boom in Ukraine thanks to the TV series “Chernobyl”
Thanks to the popularity of the series “Chernobyl” produced by HBO, the demand for excursions to the Exclusion Zone of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant has increased by 30-40%, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Reuters writes about this.
Representatives of the travel agency SoloEast said that in May of this year the number of tourists increased by 30%, and 40% more places were booked for the summer.
The Chernobyl Tour company reported an increase in demand for excursions by 30-40% after the release of the series, but it managed to get its bearings and is already offering a special tour of the locations present in the series.
Tour guides also note that visitors are increasingly asking about places and events they learned about from the series.
Tours in English cost an average of $100 per person; more than 70 thousand tourists visit the zone annually, most of whom are foreigners.
Anton Taranenko from the tourism department of the Kyiv city administration reports that the Kyiv authorities, together with business representatives, want to make a comprehensive tour of the filming locations and events of the series.
It is expected that the tour will start in Kyiv, where visitors will be shown the places depicted in the series, and the finale will be a trip to the Exclusion Zone. There they will take a tour through the streets of Pripyat, and then take visitors to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and Chernobyl. At the moment, the Kyiv City State Administration is negotiating and consulting on the content of such a tour with some representatives of specialized tourism operators.
The five-part series “Chernobyl” aired on HBO from May 6 to June 3, 2019. Currently, the series about the Chernobyl disaster in 1986 ranks first in the world ranking of the best series on the IMDb website with a rating of 9,6 points.
