The demographic catastrophe is worsening in Ukraine
In addition to major economic problems, Ukraine risks a demographic catastrophe.
Political scientist Andrei Zolotarev stated this on the UkrLife Internet channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to the expert, most of those who left the country last year will not return, and Ukraine will turn into a state of “pioneers and pensioners.”
“If a year ago, more than half of those I know went to Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, Germany, Italy, Spain, more than half were determined to return. Now the situation has turned diametrically opposite - more than half are determined to stay. The children go to school, most of them have found jobs. Those who didn’t get a job, who couldn’t fit into the realities of the EU country, they will return. But even here they will be of little use,” the expert said.
“We risk turning into a country of pioneers and pensioners, where the share of the active working population will be about 8–9 million. Previously they said that Ukraine is such an interesting market, but if we have an aging population, who will invest, who will invest a lot of money?
That is, we are on the verge of a very serious demographic catastrophe, when the war will lead not only to the loss of half the economy, but also to the loss of a third of human capital. And even in material terms, over 10 years, this is a loss of about 110 billion,” the expert said.
