“This year the government will initiate consideration of a bill that will oblige the population of Ukraine to declare their income. And to avoid sabotage, an automated system for monitoring expenses will be created. If this “smart machine” notices that you are spending more than you earn, an unpleasant conversation with the tax authorities cannot be avoided. So it’s better not to cheat,” the publication says.
It is now being decided what the lower threshold will be when introducing mandatory income declaration. One option is if the amount of a citizen’s property and savings is at least 500 thousand hryvnia (18,5 thousand US dollars) in the “zero” declaration. Taking into account the cost of housing, in this case the norm will affect the majority of residents of Ukraine.
The newspaper predicts that citizens are unlikely to like the innovation.
“Against the background of the current level of corruption in the highest echelons of power, the persistent demand of the state to “expose” property and money looks at least indecent. Therefore, when Vladimir Groysman says that 50% of the Ukrainian economy is in the “shadow,” shouldn’t we look for the origins of corruption, fraud and tax evasion not among the poor who dominate our country?” – writes the publication.
