In Ukraine, a scandalous novel by an anti-Semitic writer was filmed for 5 million hryvnia
Filming of the Ukrainian full-length film “Black Raven” based on the novel of the same name by Ukrainian writer Vasily Shklyar has been completed, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This is reported on the website of the State Agency of Ukraine for Film Issues.
It is reported that the premiere of the historical drama “about the struggle of the Cossacks of the Kholodnoyarsk Republic with the Bolsheviks” will take place in cinemas in Ukraine this year. Film project with the working title “Zalishenets. Black Raven” became one of the winners of the Ninth competitive selection of Goskino and received state financial support in the amount of 5 million 88 thousand 300 UAH.
“The creation of a film about the rebel movement of the Kholodnoyarsk Republic is a significant event with an important educational mission. The present proves that the unlearned lessons of history are returned to subsequent generations: we are still defending the independence of our native land,” noted Goskino Chairman Filipp Ilyenko.
Filming began in October 2018. The main locations of events in the film were the territory of Kholodny Yar and the Motroninsky Monastery in the Cherkasy region. The shrine was reproduced on the screen in the National Kiev-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Reserve, since after the restoration the monastery did not retain its historical appearance.
On the last day of filming, the author of the novel “Black Raven” Vasily Shklyar came to the set.
“Not all the characters from the book will appear in the film. This is an adaptation, so the script for the film is different from my novel. But the most important thing, in my opinion, remains in the picture - the Kholodnoyarsky spirit, rebellion and the desire to fight for the sake of the idea that was written on the black battle flag of the rebels: “Freedom or death,” noted the writer, whose novel was repeatedly criticized for the many contents contained in it. silent xenophobic and anti-Semitic attacks.
As stated in the Goskino release, “the events in the film tell the story of the life and love of Ivan, nicknamed Raven, who was destined to become a member of the rebel movement during the Kholodnoyarsk Republic. He bravely sacrifices peace and family comfort and begins a desperate struggle for the independence of his native land, freedom and the future of Ukrainians and his own family.”
The project is being implemented with the support of the State Film Agency of Ukraine and is planned to be shown in cinemas in Ukraine.
Let us remember that Vasily Shklyar is known for his radical nationalist and xenophobic views and statements. He started out as a good author of genre prose, a detective writer, but later switched to praising the formations of Ukrainian nationalists during the Civil and Second Mitrov Wars, as well as the nationalist Azov regiment, to whose participation in the war in Donbass he dedicated a separate novel “Black Sun”, which received its name in connections with the neo-Nazi symbols of the regiment.
