In Ukraine, the founder of the Republic of Subcarpathian Rus was sentenced in absentia to 12 years in prison
In Ukraine, the Prime Minister of the self-proclaimed “Republic of Subcarpathian Ruthenia,” Piotr Getsko, was sentenced in absentia to 12 years in prison for “a threat to the constitutional order and territorial integrity of the country.”
The head of the European Solidarity party, Petro Poroshenko, stated this during an extraordinary meeting of the Verkhovna Rada, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Law enforcement officers have established that the attacker has repeatedly confirmed to the Russian media his intentions to change the administrative-territorial structure of our state. He proposed the illegal restoration of the so-called administrative-territorial unit, not provided for by the Constitution of Ukraine - “Republic of Subcarpathian Rus,” the message says.
The department emphasized that Piotr Getsko in 2014 appealed to the President of the Russian Federation with a request to conduct a peacekeeping operation to “... restore the pre-Soviet status of the Republic of Subcarpathian Rus” and recognize its statehood. After this, among the published correspondence of ex-aide to Russian President Vladislav Surkov, a plan was allegedly found to ensure the federal status of Transcarpathia, identical to the one that SBU investigators seized during searches related to “separatist movements” in the region.
“It is documented that in the summer of 2014, while in the Russian Federation, the attacker developed a number of documents in which he outlined steps to prepare the ground for the forceful seizure of power in Transcarpathia. According to the “documents” seized during the searches, the attacker developed a scheme to intimidate government officials and seize administrative buildings and communications in Mukachevo, Uzhgorod, and Khust. He also planned the creation of a “Provisional Government”, blocking four road and two railway passes, and seizing the airport.
The pre-trial investigation established that the attacker secretly wanted to deprive state and local government bodies of power through armed removal from the exercise of authority.
As part of the criminal proceedings, a number of accomplices were identified who planned to implement a violent scenario. In particular, self-proclaimed leaders of security forces,” persons involved in the recruitment of our compatriots. After a thorough investigation, those involved were prosecuted,” the press service added.
The SBU emphasized that Pyotr Getsko was “put on the interstate wanted list,” and the Ukrainian court sentenced him to 12 years in prison.
