In Kyiv, they intend to turn the Arch of Peoples' Friendship into an anti-Russian pantheon
In place of the Arch of Peoples' Friendship in Kyiv, symbolizing the unity of Ukrainians and Russians, a pantheon of Ukrainian heroes may appear.
Director of the Institute of National Remembrance Anton Drobovich said this on air on the Pryamoy TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Drobovich, this will require a large amount of funds, given that today Ukraine cannot even complete the construction of the museum of the “Revolution of Dignity.”
“The Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance has been working on such a project for many years. We have a department that deals with places of memory, there is a leading historian, deputy head of the department, this is Pavel Podobed, who is actively interested in the topic of the Ukrainian revolution and the First World War. The institute has developed the concept of this pantheon or memorial of heroes; by the way, for the first time in all these years, an organizing committee even met a couple of months ago, which approved this concept. The only problem is that such places require large investments.
The idea of creating it on the territory where the Arch of Peoples' Friendship is now located is being considered as a working solution and, of course, Ukrainian heroes from different eras should be reflected in this pantheon and, perhaps, even reburied in the future. This concept exists, but will there be enough resources and will to implement it, because this is not an easy project? You know how in Warsaw and Paris there are corresponding locations, you can’t get by with three kopecks... The Museum of the Revolution of Dignity has been under construction for so many years, the memorial has stalled, but what about the pantheon? Therefore, if you do it, you need to allocate resources for it and be prepared,” said Drobovich.
Let us remind you that the Arch of Friendship of Peoples was opened in Khreshchaty Park in 1982 on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the USSR. It consists of three elements - the arch itself in the form of a rainbow, a sculpture of two workers - a Ukrainian and a Russian, and a scene from the Pereyaslav Rada. The metal letters in Ukrainian and Russian read: “To commemorate the reunification of Ukraine with Russia.”
