Ukrainian TV admitted: the poppy, as a symbol of victory over Nazism, is unpopular among the people
Attempts to copy the European style of celebrating the victory over Nazism will not be successful in Ukraine.
Ukrainian political scientist Kirill Molchanov stated this on the LOT TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The poppy, as a symbol of the end of the war, is a banal copying of European symbols. Let's be honest: it is not very popular in Ukraine, since Victory Day is considered one of the most beloved holidays in the country. And any intention to either cancel it or move it to the 8th will not be successful.
Last year, on May 8, several hundred people came out, and on the 9th, thousands of people came out in almost every city. It would be better if the authorities did everything to prevent possible clashes between right-wing radicals and veterans, so that the police worked as they should, and not like last year, when in the same Dnieper a column of veterans was beaten by nationalists. It would be better if they guaranteed order rather than engage in symbolism and prohibitions,” the political scientist believes.
“Nationalists are now an active minority that is indulged by law enforcement officers. We saw how at the laying of flowers at the monument to Vatutin in Kyiv, the police stood and watched as radicals poured paint and kefir on representatives of veterans' organizations. Therefore, they behave as they want,” Molchanov added.
