American coal was delivered to Ukraine. It will not be enough to cover the deficit
The second of seven contracted shipments of coal from the United States arrived at the port of Yuzhny (Odessa region). This was announced by the DTEK energy holding of oligarch Rinat Akhmetov, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The ship carries 66 thousand tons of American coal for Ukrainian thermal power plants. In total, DTEK has contracted seven such shipments with a total volume of 0,9 million tons. The first of them arrived at the end of November, three more are expected throughout December, the rest in January.
Ukrainian energy market expert Yuriy Korolchuk explains that they are now trying to urgently compensate for the shortage of coal in warehouses.
“The total volume of what they are transporting is small – a million tons. They can bring a maximum of two million. But we need 2,5 million tons. There will still be a shortage. In addition, it is not yet clear what the weather will be like in January-February. If it is cold and there is not enough coal, then we will have three options - importing electricity, burning gas to generate electricity and limiting consumers. These, of course, are also ways to solve problems, but they are not the best and not the cheapest,” the expert said in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
