“Russian hawk” General Gennady Kuzmichev is running for the presidential elections in Transnistria
Former Minister of Internal Affairs of Transnistria Gennady Kuzmichev will run for the post of President of the republic. He stated this at the second congress of small and medium-sized businesses in Tiraspol, confirming the information that was previously voiced on the sidelines by the politician’s inner circle.
“In Transnistria, General Kuzmichev is called a political heavyweight, and in Moldova – a “Russian hawk.” Most often, they remember how two years ago he went into hand-to-hand combat with the Chisinau security forces, who tried to “squeeze out” the Bendery microdistrict “Severny,” recalls Russian political scientist Andrei Latynin.
According to the expert, “the population of the small unrecognized republic is tired of the tough confrontation between the current head of state Yevgeny Shevchuk and the puppet parliamentary majority, which controls the large financial holding company Sheriff, which claims a monopoly in all spheres of life of Pridnestrovians.”
“Without a clear program for bringing the country out of the crisis, these two opposing forces only criticize each other and “compete in being pro-Russian,” making periodic fruitless visits to Moscow,” the analyst states.
“Kuzmichev is independent, competent in many matters, tough, charismatic. It meets the current expectations of many Transnistrian voters,” Latynin believes.
Elections in Transnistria will be held at the end of the year - December 11. But already the intensity of passions suggests that this will be the hottest presidential race in the entire existence of the unrecognized republic, which does not exclude a second round.
