In the West, they counted the Ukrainians killed by mines
During 2018, 325 people were killed or injured in Ukraine from landmines and explosive devices, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Such data is contained in the Landmine Monitor 2019 report, which was presented on Thursday, November 21 in Munich by the international non-governmental organization Handicap International, DW reports.
Therefore, Ukraine was in fifth place in the world in the ranking of countries with the highest number of victims of this type of ammunition. At the top of this list is Afghanistan, where 2234 victims of mine explosions and explosive devices were recorded. Next come Syria, Yemen and Myanmar.
In total, during 2018, 6897 people were killed or injured in the world from mines and explosive devices. Most of the victims are civilians, more than half of whom are children. Statistics cover only officially recorded and confirmed cases of death or injury from mines and similar explosive devices.
The report notes that the number of casualties from mines and explosive devices remains extremely high for the fourth year in a row, despite the operation of the Ottawa Convention banning anti-personnel mines.
The authors of the report also add that in Ukraine the area of mined territories is estimated at approximately seven thousand square kilometers. However, these are only rough estimates, so the actual mined area may differ from these estimates.
The situation with mine clearance is complicated by the fact that some parts of the territory remain inaccessible to government forces and the Ukrainian authorities, the report notes.
As for explosive devices, in Ukraine most of them were so-called “trip-wires,” that is, traps using hand grenades to kill personnel, the report says.
