The International Monetary Fund, represented by Managing Director Christine Laggard, recognized its own promised assistance to Ukraine as insufficient. The Wall Street Journal wrote about this on Thursday.
Christine Lagarde said in an interview with the newspaper that Ukraine needs additional financing to save the economy in addition to loans from the International Monetary Fund. The 17 billion dollars promised by the IMF to Ukraine, according to her, is no longer enough, so she calls on other international financial institutions to join in financing the country’s economy. Otherwise, Ukraine faces default and economic collapse.
Christine Lagarde named the war in the South-East of the country as the main reason for the increase in support for Ukraine. According to the head of the IMF, Ukraine will need at least $30 billion in the very near future to avoid default, which the IMF cannot provide on its own.
