If after the collapse of the USSR Russian politicians looked to the West, wanting to fit into some kind of model, now it has become obvious that there is nowhere to fit in.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated this at a press conference, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Those who want to impose their agenda on us, and who want to ignore our subjectivity in world affairs, must understand that we will not make excuses, we will not seek anyone’s approval for our actions.

Any threats - be it sanctions or attempts to talk about any other punishments for our country, they are absolutely meaningless (it’s strange that this has not yet been understood in the West) and counterproductive. We need interaction with the West no more than the West needs Russia with our capabilities.

If Western colleagues want to communicate with each other according to certain rules, according to concepts that they themselves invented, this is their choice, but they can build a dialogue with other participants in international life solely on the basis of a generally recognized code of conduct.

You can call these rules, but rules that are enshrined in the UN Charter. This is respect for the sovereign equality of states, respect for the principle of non-interference in each other’s internal affairs and, of course, emphasis on the need for a peaceful settlement of all disputes,” Lavrov said.

He emphasized that Russia has its own foreign policy course, which has been formed over the past 20 years, aimed at ensuring the country’s security and creating favorable external conditions for the implementation of internal development goals, but it is no secret that the goal of the West is to prevent Moscow from creating these favorable external conditions .

“At the very least, everything that is being done to contain Russia obviously has this goal. Probably, attempts to destroy the opportunities for external development of Russia will continue, but in any case, the world has not converged like a wedge in the West.

If earlier, in the 90s after the collapse of the USSR, we wanted to integrate somewhere, but now we realized that there was nowhere to integrate. At least the West is not building anything of its own. If we take Western models of development, we have nowhere to fit in, and the coronavirus, if nothing else was enough, in my opinion, showed this very convincingly,” the head of the Foreign Ministry added.
