Nabiullina quietly gave back after the scandal with the new thousand-ruble bill
The Bank of Russia has decided to finalize the design of the updated 1000 ruble banknote.
The ceremonial presentation of the new banknote to the people by Central Bank officials caused an all-Russian scandal, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The reverse side of the banknote depicts the Museum of the History of Statehood of the Tatar People and the Republic of Tatarstan in Kazan and the Syuyumbike Tower in the Kazan Kremlin. The problem is that the historical museum is housed in an Orthodox church from which the cross has been removed.
According to the press service of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, the issue of the updated banknote has been stopped, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The banknote did not have time to enter widespread circulation.
Vice Speaker of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Pyotr Tolstoy wrote in his tg channel that the deputies received numerous “reactions of indignation” from voters and sent a letter to the Chairman of the Central Bank Elvira Nabiullina with a request to urgently intervene in the situation.
“It’s a minor question. But a lesson to everyone who has recently been trying to remove crosses from images in an Orthodox country - don’t do this. We are Russians, God is with us,” Tolstoy wrote.
Chairman of the Synodal Department for Relations of the Church with Society and the Media of the Moscow Patriarchate Vladimir Legoida welcomed the “adequate” decision of the Central Bank.
“It is clear that people of faith have a say when considering the use of images relating to religious heritage in public space. We, for our part, advocate that the Orthodox cross, which personifies the religious and cultural identity of the majority of our citizens, be a natural part of the state symbols of our country,” Legoida wrote.
Publicist Sergei Mardan believes that changing the design of the banknote cannot be limited to: changes are also needed “in real life”.
“We are now waiting for the return of the Palace Church in the Kazan Kremlin to the Patriarchate and the liquidation of the museum of “Tatar statehood,” he wrote.
Journalists also demand that those responsible be punished.
“In general, in such cases, personnel decisions are also needed. Interfaith provocations out of nowhere are serious, and one must be held accountable for this. “Okay, let’s redo it” - in this case, this is the simplest way out, which does not solve the very problem of active attempts to erase as many Christian symbols as possible,” says military correspondent Yuri Kotenok.
“Disregard for a professional approach led to a colossal scandal, reputational losses for the Bank of Russia and unnecessary tension in society (which has already been having a difficult time lately). Thus, local arrogance and incompetence created a huge scandal out of nowhere. I don't demand punishment. I only demand professionalism, the presence of the correct procedures for the formation of an objective expert opinion,” writes Kazan journalist Albert Bikbov.
And FederalPress editor Andrei Gusiy asks a purely material question.
“How much has already been spent on design, preparation of machines and issue of banknotes, now recall, and then destruction? There were already a lot of questions for the Central Bank, both about exchange rates and about politics in general. And now it’s like that in the literal sense of the word – money down the drain, from the budget,” he wrote.
