The author draws attention to the situation in Catalonia, where the Spanish authorities, instead of establishing a constructive dialogue with the authorities of the autonomy, chose the path of repression and pressure, which “does not fit into the principles of freedom of opinion and the right to a referendum on any issue declared by the European Union.”

The European bureaucrats responded dryly. They say that Brussels does not interfere in the internal affairs of member countries of the European Union,” notes Martynov.
According to him, now the Catalans have come out to mass protests not for secession from Spain, but for “the rights of the European individual, loudly declared in the EU, which for several generations of European peoples have been born with the conviction of the reality of these rights.”
The political scientist points out that just a few years ago it was impossible to imagine in enlightened Europe that the central Spanish authorities would block the official websites of the Catalan authorities and bring troops and heavy armored vehicles into Barcelona, but today such a scenario has become a reality, as well as the fact that in the leading EU country there are ultranationalists became the third most important force.
“Where is Europe heading in the tight chains of the European Union? It seems that the funny maxims of Ukrainian leaders in recent years, that “Ukraine is Europe”, in the light of developments, are not so devoid of common sense. Today we are witnessing the process of “Ukrainization” of the EU. The methods that the Ukrainian authorities used in Donbass and throughout the country are now being adopted by European bureaucrats. The example of Spain, I'm afraid, is not the last.
In this sense, all problematic questions to Russia from the collective West regarding South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Transnistria, Donbass and so on play in completely different colors.
