The Catholicization and Lutheranization of Belarus began
The current religious situation in Belarus is of serious concern.
Political scientist Alexey Mukhin stated this on the Vesti FM radio station, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The Catholicization and Lutheranization of Belarus is one of the challenges that we will have to face, if not now, then tomorrow. In Russia, as you know, the missionary activity of the Catholic and Lutheran churches is not prohibited, but is not encouraged. The Russian Orthodox Church stands on guard and does not allow foreign missionaries to minister to Russian lands.
In Belarus this is more relaxed. The Belarusian Orthodox Church is weaker, and taking advantage of this, Catholics and Lutherans are taking more and more people under their wing. This threat still needs to be dealt with. The proselytism of Catholicism should not be underestimated. It has been tested for centuries and has effective models of impact on societies of different countries,” said Mukhin.
The Catholic Church is the second largest religious denomination in Belarus; according to the Catholic Church, it has about 1,4 million believers (15% of the total population). The largest number of believers live in the west of the country, where they make up more than 60%.
