It began: The US is “concerned” about “Russian interference in Serbian affairs”
American-funded Radio Liberty published a statement from a US State Department spokesman expressing “concerns about Russian interference in the internal affairs of Serbia.” The reason was fanned by the pro-Western opposition in Belgrade "spy scandal", in which an employee of the Russian Embassy is accused of involvement. This theme was thrown into the media on the eve of the visit of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to Russia, which should take place against the backdrop of a rapprochement between Moscow and Belgrade - the recent signing agreements with the Eurasian Union and ongoing Russian arms supplies Serbian army.
“We are concerned about reports of obscene Russian interference in Serbia. The United States supports Serbia's efforts to investigate this incident and urges the government to bring those responsible for these illegal acts to justice under the rule of law,” a State Department spokesman said.
“The Russian government is attempting to destabilize Europe through military pressure, malicious cyber activity, and malicious influence in many countries that are America's allies, partners, and friends,” the statement also noted.
“We agreed with the Russian government at the highest level: you must put an end to your destabilizing activities throughout the world,” added the Radio Liberty interlocutor.
It should be noted that Vucic himself confirmed the day before in Novi Sad that he was preparing for a visit to Russia. Serbia will be represented by a large delegation. “We are very close in all respects,” Vucic emphasized, adding that he considers Vladimir Putin a sincere friend of Serbia.
