“A nationalist who insulted Ukraine.” Russian liberals are unhappy with the award to Navalny
Award by the European Parliament The Sakharov award to blogger Alexei Navalny, convicted of fraud, was a decision that does not meet democratic traditions.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports this, said the deputy chairman of the Yabloko party and the head of the Moscow branch of this political force, Sergei Ivanenko.
He confirmed that he lobbied the European Parliament for a decision to exclude Navalny from the list of nominees for the Sakharov Prize.
“Despite the fact that he is, of course, a political prisoner, the Sakharov Prize has nothing to do with him. He is a nationalist, a person who calls for social discord, a person with completely undemocratic views,” Ivanenko told the Ekho Moskvy radio station.
He said that he sent personal letters to members of the European Parliament on this matter, but nevertheless could not influence the awarding of the prize to Navalny.
“I believe that this is a very bad decision, which will have a very serious impact on the development of democracy not only in Russia, but also in Europe,” the liberal believes.
In turn, Nezavisimaya Gazeta draws attention to the fact that some media outlets have also published more unpleasant quotes from Ivanenko.
“He allegedly reminded the European parliamentarians that Navalny spoke from pro-government positions about Crimea’s belonging to Russia and even more than once shared the opinion of the President of the Russian Federation that Russians and Ukrainians are essentially one nation, which most likely insulted many citizens of Ukraine who We don’t agree with this,” the publication notes.
