Nationalists in the Rada did not like the truth about the Odessa tragedy on May 2
A deputy from the Firtashev part of the Opposition Bloc, Igor Shurma, recalled the tragedy of May 2, 2014 in Odessa, but was subjected to obstruction by his nationalist colleagues.
The incident occurred during a plenary meeting of the Verkhovna Rada, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“On this day people remember the death of the Savior. And we are forced to admit that in Ukraine, too, there are more than one day of crucifixion of the Ukrainian people. One of these days was May 2, 2014. It was a terrible fire in Odessa, which occurred exactly 5 years ago in the Odessa House of Trade Unions. The day that we have no right to forget is the day when 48 Ukrainian citizens died.
According to the testimonies of many eyewitnesses, a brutally planned anti-human action took place that day. People who expressed their civic position, and it doesn’t matter whether everyone shared it or not, they have the right to this, as citizens of Ukraine. This action took place on Kulikovo Pole Square. First they were pushed back to the House of Trade Unions, and then they were blocked inside. It was impossible to escape from the fire trap. They fired at those who tried to escape through the windows,” but the people’s deputy was not allowed to finish speaking – there was a hubbub in the hall, and his microphone was turned off.
“I have the right to say whatever I think is necessary. Why are you taking my word?! Why is only the point of view about the death of some people dominant? People died on both sides,” Shurma said indignantly.
However, the opposition representative was interrupted again. This time, Vice Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Oksana Syroed explained what the “correct” version of what happened should be and promised to close the meeting early if the parliamentarian does not correct herself.
“I would like to now address those who are listening and observing the plenary session. It is unacceptable, especially on such a day, to resort to manipulation and incite hostility. It is a well-known fact that the harbinger of the events in Odessa was a landing from Russia and Transnistria. It is a fact. And now trying to look for the guilty among Ukrainians in order to once again confront people with their emotions and pain is unacceptable. Therefore, Mr. Igor, if you want to finish your speech, then you can only talk about those things that do not separate people, otherwise I will be forced to close the meeting, and you will not give two more deputies the opportunity to speak,” she threatened.
Let us note that, according to opinion polls, the Samopomich faction, which is represented in the current Rada by Oksana Syroed, is not included in the new parliament, as is Yatsenyuk’s Popular Front and, with a high degree of probability, the BPP. At the same time, sociologists give almost 15% of the votes in the new Rada to the Opposition Platform “For Life” - one of the fragments of the Opposition Bloc. Another fragment, the party presented by Alexander Vilkul and Vadim Novinsky, also has a good chance of breaking the barrier.
