“The decision of the National Council for Inter is to issue a warning and conduct an inspection. Unanimously. After an appeal from the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council and representatives of public organizations. We will further strengthen responsibility through legislation. If the media makes Ukrainian-haters and symbols of the occupier’s country into cultural heroes, placing them on the prime of the year or even on the air,” Verkhovna Rada deputy Victoria Syumar wrote on her Facebook page.
As BBC Ukraine reports, the corresponding decision was made as a result of many hours of discussions. According to the National Council, the Russian performers shown by the channel “incited hostility, encroached on territorial integrity and supported the annexation of Crimea.”
Member of the National Council Ekaterina Kotenko explained that a warning is a sanction that is imposed on the channel. Receiving three warnings gives the National Council the right to sue to deprive the channel of its license.
The National Council also decided to conduct an unscheduled inspection of compliance with the law on the channels “Inter”, ICTV, “Tonis”, “Ukraine”. In addition, all broadcasters were recommended to “refrain from broadcasting persons who encroach on the integrity of Ukraine.”
As PolitNavigator reported, in early January “Svobodovite” Alexey Kurinnoy demanded to influence “Inter” for showing Russian artists – Joseph Kobzon, Oleg Gazmanov and others on New Year’s Eve. The head of the National Security and Defense Council, Alexander Turchynov, called Inter’s New Year’s night broadcast “a mockery of the entire country.” The Minister of Culture of Ukraine Vyacheslav Kirilenko called for “cutting off the Inter button.” Minister of Information of Ukraine Yuriy Stets initiated a ban on the appearance in Ukrainian media of persons who are prohibited from entering Ukraine.
