“We learned about the seizure at 8 o’clock in the morning, residents called me back and informed me about it. There are more than 1000 people in the building. I asked them who they were, they answered that they were Donetsk militias. I know many people, these are our people and they are putting forward demands for a referendum. We all agree, I cannot contradict them,” Shtepa said on LifeNews, Slavgorod reports.
“Three days ago, I wrote an appeal to the Prime Minister of Ukraine, in which I said that we need to sit down at the negotiating table. The whole of Slavyansk today took to the streets of the city and supports the activists. Now the Ukrainian flag has been removed from the city administration building and the Russian flag has been hoisted on it,” said the mayor of Slavyansk.
She emphasized that she opposes the armed suppression of activists.
“The whole city stood up as a shield, protecting the guys who captured the building. And if the Ukrainian authorities try to start an uprising, a huge number of civilians will die. This cannot be allowed. If someone goes against people, blood will be shed and they will not be able to wash themselves off,” the publication quotes her.
“Personally, I will not allow this, I stand guard over my city. These people came to us in peace, they have no aggression towards us. Donetsk police today with the people who came. We are a peaceful people, brother will not go against brother,” Shtepa assures
In her opinion, the entire city is in favor of holding a referendum.
“We will hold a referendum, what is happening here suggests that the Ukrainian authorities need to think about it. I am sure that tomorrow they will announce the decision to hold a referendum in the regions of Ukraine,” the mayor believes.
Let us remind you that on April 12, pro-Russian activists seized the police and city administration buildings of Slavyansk, as well as the prosecutor’s office building in Donetsk.
