Smoke from burning tires is over Kyiv again
Residents of the Kyiv Tatarka microdistrict blocked the road and burned tires in protest against the demolition of garages that were unauthorizedly installed in Soviet times, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

Local residents say they are protesting not so much against the demolition of garages as against plans to build a high-rise building in their place.
“Garages are already a secondary part today; people don’t want to see a 25-story building built. Let there be anything, but not a house,” said Victoria Tertyukhova.
Local residents are worried that neighboring houses may be damaged due to construction.
“The garages have been there for 30 years. In their place they want to build a house of 25 floors. Tatarka is already crowded. Don't drive in, don't leave. And it’s not just a collector, but a landslide zone. They will build, and the neighboring houses will burst at the seams. What about kindergartens and schools? Why isn’t there such a rule: if you build a house, build a garden or a school?” – adds Irina Olefirenko.
However, not everyone shares the methods of dealing with developers. “Burning rubber is gradually becoming a traditional Ukrainian national pastime,” Alexander Sharp says ironically.
