“In a little more than a year of being in Russian prisons, Savchenko managed to make a dizzying career from an MI-24 pilot-operator to a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada and a member of the Ukrainian delegation to PACE,” the publication recalls. “She also aroused great interest in herself for her long hunger strikes, which, according to human rights activists, almost led to her death. However, the place chosen for the trial of such a famous person was more than modest. The premises of the Donetsk City Court turned out to be too small to accommodate all of Savchenko’s supporters and opponents. There was not enough space even for journalists, since all the chairs in the hall were occupied by Cossacks and several relatives of the defendant. Media representatives were asked to watch the broadcast from the lobby, where, according to the journalists, the sound was too bad, but the court was indifferent to their complaints.”
At the same time, the newspaper says that at the entrance to the courthouse, both people in embroidered shirts and T-shirts calling for Savchenko’s release, as well as activists of the National Liberation Movement, who shouted that she killed her brothers in the former Ukraine, crowded together.
At the same time, MK continues, during the meeting, the defendant’s lawyers stated that the victims in the case included citizens of Ukraine, and it is not clear why Russia represents their interests.
“We know that Russia recently got involved in a war with Syria,” said the defendant’s lawyer Nikolai Polozov. “Does this mean that we will soon be considering cases where the victims will be Syrians?”
“Russia’s will is determined by the seizure of Crimea and the invasion of Syria,” Nadezhda Savchenko also supported the defense tactics. “At the same time, Russia refused to recognize me as a prisoner of war. Russia ignores international law."
At the same time, the publication notes that “speeches about Savchenko’s connection with the referendum in Crimea and the war in the Middle East did not impress the court, and the petition to return the case to the prosecutor’s office was rejected.”
