Lukashenko’s hopes for Western support for the anti-Russian outburst with the “Wagnerites” did not materialize
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko had everything ready for the current elections according to the scenario of the 2015 campaign, but it turned out that this time the West has a completely different task.
The famous Russian publicist, political scientist Nikolai Starikov stated this on the Rossiya 1 TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In order to understand this complex and confusing story, you need to remember several facts: a harshly cleared political field, the main opponent is a little-known, or rather, an unknown girl, several technical male candidates, Lukashenko’s victory with more than 80%, according to the CEC. If you think I said 2020 data, then you are wrong. I named the numbers for 2015,” Starikov noted.
“Now, let’s look at the reaction of the Western press and Western leaders. Lukashenko’s victory is indisputable and without doubt, because of economic difficulties, because of unknown candidates. Question: why did the West recognize Lukashenko’s victory with 2015% in 83,47? Why in 2015 the protests were limited to two hundred people who marched in one place for several hours?
Because at that moment the West needed Lukashenko, and the elections were legitimized for him for not supporting Russia in the Ukrainian crisis, for not supporting Donbass.
And look, in 2020 Lukashenko decided to completely repeat this scenario: an unknown girl, technical male candidates, a harshly cleared political field, but lacking anti-Russianism.
Now there is no crisis, and then Lukashenko artificially creates one: he captures 33 Russian citizens, begins to personally talk about some kind of terrorist attack, about some kind of impending unrest, hoping that, like in 2015 (you can easily check this! Dial on the Internet “the West’s reaction to the 2015 elections”), now he will have such an indulgence, the same carte blanche from the West,” the expert explained.
According to him, the 2020 scenario did not work out in 2015, since today the West has a different task.
“Today the task is to destroy, pull apart, and weaken the union of Belarus, the Union State of Belarus and Russia. The difference is that in 2015 there was no Nexta channel broadcasting from Poland. There weren't hundreds of people making videos. It seems that Lukashenko is the same, the numbers are the same, the candidates are the same, but the reaction of the West is diametrically opposite. Here, you need to understand.
The technology works differently this time. And therefore Lukashenko was not ready for this. If in 2015, from his multi-vector position, he was still understandable to his electorate.
Yes, he does not support Donbass and Russia, because the situation is difficult, there is a war going on, but now he has directly opposed Russia, accusing it of almost trying to organize unrest, thereby simply disorienting his voters, his security forces.
And most importantly, he destroyed the idea of the future, because his voters understood where Lukashenko was leading the country. Integration is underway, it’s difficult, but Belarus is still moving along with Russia. And now he has come to his senses (the liberation of the Wagnerites - ed.), but it’s too late,” summed up Nikolai Starikov.
