Sevastopol, March 14 (PolitNavigator, Alexander Kononov) – Talk about the increased power of the Black Sea Fleet is currently somewhat ahead of events, but not much ahead. The Black Sea Fleet is ready to accept new ships, and such ships already exist, with ready-made crews. At the same time, they are qualitatively higher than their predecessors.
This was stated in Sevastopol by Advisor to the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Admiral Igor Kasatonov. Answering a question about the prospects for the development of the Black Sea Fleet, he did not agree with the correspondent’s statement that over the past year the fleet had allegedly significantly increased its power. However, he explained that he would begin to increase it very soon, with an emphasis on the quality of ships, and not on their quantity.

“For now there is only talk about this, and what you say is not entirely true, but the prospects are very good. We, as people of the old school, want to get what was before - a fleet of 800 ships. But there is no need for such a number of ships now, because new ships with increased combat capabilities, interspecific interaction have been developed and, of course, the Black Sea Fleet will be smaller in number, but qualitatively larger,” Kasatonov said.
At the same time, he hinted that the scope of his tasks would not be limited to the Black Sea basin, explaining that “tasks have been added in the Mediterranean Sea, since hot spots have moved there.”
“The Black Sea Fleet is ready to accept new ships that really need to go. I was on these ships in Kaliningrad. This is the ship “Ivan Grigorovich” - it already has a crew, it is sailing, and “Essen”, and three other ships. All of them already have crews and commanders, so such systematic training is underway. And it's the same on submarines. Therefore, we wait, we wait,” the admiral concluded.
