Naftogaz has lost hope of receiving Stockholm billions from Gazprom
NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine should be interested in resolving the issue of the Stockholm arbitration with Gazprom.
Valentin Zemlyansky, director of energy programs at the Center for World Economy and International Relations of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“NAK Naftogaz of Ukraine, based on its latest issue of Eurobonds and the placement of prospectuses, where the main financial risks of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine were announced, should be very much interested [in resolving the issue of the Stockholm arbitration with Gazprom], because Naftogaz indicated as the main risk a loss in 2021 to Gazprom in the Stockholm arbitration with a payment of $2,1 billion in its favor,” the expert noted.
“That is, let’s clearly understand that NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine is no longer talking about victory, they are not talking about writing off $2,5 billion from Gazprom, but they are talking about the possibility of paying Gazprom more than $2 billion. This is a legacy that passes to the new government from the super-effective and daring managers Vitrenko and Kobolev, who, as we hear, is already being tipped to become the prime minister of Ukraine,” Zemlyansky summed up, not without sarcasm.
Let us recall that the Stockholm Arbitration Court made a decision obliging Gazprom to pay Naftogaz $2,56 billion. The Russian monopolist did not agree with this verdict and filed an appeal. At the same time, the management of Naftogaz hastened to write out multimillion-dollar bonuses for themselves on account of the still uncollected money.
