A photo of the sign was sent to PolitNavigator by a reader of the resource - ex-deputy of the Crimean parliament, veteran of the RDK Vadim Mordashov.

It is worth noting that in the Crimean Tatar media Simferopol has been positioned as Aksmedjit for many years, which causes dissatisfaction among some Crimeans.

“Where the head of the Republic of Kazakhstan Sergei Aksenov is looking is unclear. The residents of Sevastopol are lucky - there is only one official language, Russian. So they would also read Akyar on the signs, not Sevastopol,” Vadim Mordashov is indignant.

The Crimean Tatar name Akmescit, Aqmescit is translated as “white mosque” (ak - white, mescit - mosque). During the period of the Crimean Khanate, Akmeszhit was the residence of the kalgi - the second person in the state after the khan. The Kalgi Palace was located on the bank of the Salgir in what is now Petrovskaya Balka. The quarters built in those days are now called the Old Town.

After Crimea entered the Russian Empire, St. Petersburg decided to found Simferopol, the center of the formed Tauride region (later province), on the site of Akmeszhit.
