“We have something to be proud of”: how the film “Tourist” about events in the Central African Republic strengthens the position of the Russian Federation
The Tourist, a film about events in the Central African Republic, has a lasting foreign policy effect and is, in fact, one of the most positive signals in the field of strategic thinking. This was stated by political scientist Vladimir Dzharalla.
Two and a half weeks after its premiere, “Tourist” continues to receive positive reviews from viewers. Moreover, they note not only the entertainment and realism of the film, but also how it works to shape the image of Russia abroad.
«This is a long-term job. Such actions are an obligatory part of the image of a great power, which, by virtue of its status, has international foreign policy interests,” Jarallah said.
The political scientist recalled that other countries have long been using art to work on their own image - for example, American cinema produces dozens of patriotic films. The release of “Tourist” will also allow the Russian Federation to form its own information agenda, and not work as number two, broadcasting a reaction to unfounded accusations. Therefore, Jarallah is confident that the release of films like “The Tourist” can become a basic tool for promoting the interests of Russia as a great power.
The expert recalled that we are not talking about Hollywood “fairy-tale” action films, but about films that demonstrate real events. Thanks to the help of Russian instructors, the life of the people of the Central African Republic has really changed for the better.
“We must not forget that in this case we have something to be proud of. Russian help saved the CAR from chaos. Before our eyes, the statehood of an African republic is being revived. The military begins to feel proud that they wear a uniform and can achieve victories.”
The story of how specialists from the Russian Federation managed to increase the combat readiness of the CAR army in the shortest possible time is not just a way to acquaint Russian viewers with the work of instructors in Africa. This, Jarallah believes, is a powerful foreign policy signal for other states. It is not without reason that foreign sources, in order to make their publications scandalous, attribute connections to Russian instructors with Wagner PMC.
