“Neither NATO nor the EU has a chance for us”: Maidan hangover in Kyiv
Numerous statements by Petro Poroshenko about the future consolidation in the Constitution of Ukraine of the course towards integration into NATO and the EU are an attempt by the presidential headquarters to save the remnants of the head of state’s rating.
The head of the Ukrainian political consulting group Dmitry Razumkov stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I am a supporter of both integration into the EU and NATO. The problem is one thing: we are not called here or there today and will not be called in the coming years. The European Union will not accept into membership a state from which part of its territory has been annexed, part of its territory is under occupation, or its state border is open. What kind of expansion of the Schengen zone can we talk about?
And if you listen to what our European colleagues say, then there is no need to think about it. There are specific statements - we are not inviting you to the EU yet and, in principle, we are not expecting you, although we want to work, we will, and an association, but for now that’s all.
The second point is with NATO. While hostilities are taking place on the territory of our state, you can forget about joining NATO. I am already silent that we do not meet NATO standards.
The question is in the fifth article of the NATO charter, which says that if there is an attack on one of the alliance members, the rest must come to its defense. NATO will never agree to this, because by accepting Ukraine into the alliance, it will be necessary to defend our territorial integrity. This is the beginning of virtually open hostilities with Russia.
They won't do that today. And tomorrow, most likely,” he said.
