“The people are running” – Moldova is on the verge of famine
Drought has reduced the grain harvest in Moldova by half.
Nezavisimaya Gazeta writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Fewer fruits and vegetables are ripe, and they are imported into the republic from abroad. Moldova exports meat: it is easier to slaughter its own cows than to feed them. Prices on Moldovan markets have approached those in Moscow,” the article says.
It is predicted that by September there will be 100 thousand unemployed in the country. Guest workers who previously sent money to their families back home are returning home. According to statistics, a quarter of the population is below the poverty line.
“Moldova, which we knew, is changing, losing its status as a flourishing republic. Farmers are calling it a nightmare year and say poverty is knocking on their doors.
It is not surprising that people are leaving the country, and not to earn money, as quite recently, but forever (most of them to Romania and Russia),” the article says.
According to statistics, the population of the republic has almost halved since 1990.
