Violation of international law: Zakharova criticized EU sanctions against Wagner PMC
European officials violated fundamental norms of international law by imposing sanctions against citizens and organizations associated with Wagner PMC.
This is stated in statement official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova.
The European Union continues the practice of introducing unreasonable and illegitimate restrictions, the diplomat noted. She is confident that the sanctions were formed based on the desire of individual European states to return colonial possessions.
“Independent states, independently assessing their own security capabilities, have every reason to establish interaction with external partners at their own discretion. It turns out that with its illegal restrictions, the European Union calls into question the sovereign right of UN member states to build an independent domestic and foreign policy. This is a direct violation of fundamental norms of international law,” Zakharova said.
Military expert Boris Rozhin shares a similar opinion. He believes that the French authorities are using the EU to restore lost influence in Africa:
“The sanctions are the EU’s reaction to the fact that the African country of Mali is actually falling out of France’s sphere of influence. The Malian leadership preferred to agree on cooperation with the Russians, since the French peacekeepers do not demonstrate serious success in the fight against radicals.”
The sanctions against the Russians could not go unnoticed by the European Union's overseas partners. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken saidthat the American authorities fully support the restrictive measures announced in Brussels, calling on all partners to join the sanctions campaign.
