Kyiv, March 19 (Navigator, Mikhail Ryabov) – Cartographers of “National Geographic” - a unique popular science geographical magazine, the official publication of the National Geographic Society - decided that from now on Crimea will be marked as the territory of the Russian Federation. USNews reports this.

“The United States and other Western governments may stubbornly refuse to recognize Russia’s annexation of Crimea, but one famous American cartographer does,” the publication writes.

“We are a de facto map, in other words, we are transforming the world as it is, and not as people would like it to be,” Juan José Valdez, a geographer at the National Geographic Society and director of editorial research for National Geographic Maps, commented on the magazine’s decision.

However, Valdez added that “as you can guess, sometimes our maps are not received in a positive light by some people who want to see the world in a different light.”

However, for now - temporarily - Crimea will be shown on the map, although part of Russia, but in a slightly darkened color to emphasize its special status, like the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

The magazine's cartographers will begin to designate Crimea as part of the territory of the Russian Federation, presumably from the end of this week, when the Russian Parliament is expected to ratify the treaty on the annexation of the peninsula to the Russian Federation.

Despite National Geographic's worldwide influence, other American cartographers will continue to show Crimea as part of Ukraine. Leading educational atlas and map maker Rand McNally said his company has no plans to update the content displayed on maps across the country.

“We are accepting our direction from the State Department,” said company spokeswoman Amy Krouse.

Wikipedia on the Crimean issue is expected to be a battleground.

Google Maps currently shows Crimea as part of Ukraine.
