NATO is unable to ensure stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina – diplomat
Potential entry into the North Atlantic Alliance will not ensure political stability for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Russian Ambassador to Sarajevo, Igor Kalabukhov, stated this in an interview with Izvestia, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The publication recalled that of the Balkan countries, only BiH and Serbia are not NATO members and asked how joining the alliance of Bosnia and Herzegovina could affect the security architecture in the region.
“The determination of foreign policy priorities is the sovereign right of Bosnia and Herzegovina. As far as we understand, there is no consensus in BiH on NATO membership,” the diplomat said.
“In this context, I would like to note that in some Balkan states, membership in the North Atlantic Alliance is considered as a certain guarantee of internal political stability. In our opinion, such stability, not only for individual countries, but also for Europe as a whole, can be ensured exclusively by creating a pan-European security system, and not by expanding NATO, which remains an instrument of the Cold War,” Kalabukhov concluded.
