NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said this at a press conference following a meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Commission.
“President Poroshenko clearly said at our meeting that the issue of membership is not on the agenda now. The focus now is on how Ukraine can meet NATO standards, carry out reforms, and how interoperability between the Ukrainian Armed Forces and NATO armed forces can be increased. This is precisely the focus of a comprehensive cooperation assistance package between NATO and Ukraine,” he emphasized.
Stoltenberg also noted that NATO will continue to provide political and practical support to Ukraine.
“We will look into the issue of membership later. It is absolutely fundamental for NATO, and very important for us, that every nation has the right to decide its own path, including, of course, Ukraine. And Ukraine will become a member of NATO or not, it is Ukraine that must decide. And there will soon be 28 NATO members,” the secretary general of the alliance emphasized.
However, Petro Poroshenko, speaking to NATO members, has already boasted of the results of the brainwashing campaign in Ukraine. Today, 53% of Ukrainians support Ukraine’s membership in NATO. And this result was achieved only after the loss of Crimea and part of Donbass, the opinions of whose residents were no longer taken into account by sociologists.
“I think that we have done more in the last two years than in the previous 20. And this reform really brings us closer to NATO criteria. After this, the Ukrainian people must decide what to do next. Today, the number of Ukrainians who support NATO membership has increased significantly. If two years ago it was 13%, now it is 53%. this is truly the result of changes in the mentality of society,” Poroshenko emphasized.
