The atmosphere at the alliance headquarters is reminiscent of the Cold War, writes special correspondent "Kommersant". In fact, all the measures that will be discussed today at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers are in one way or another related to containing Russia. Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced: “We must strengthen the defense of our members and provide support to Ukraine.”

Today, according to him, the foreign ministers will discuss the implementation of three decisions of the September summit in Wales related to Ukraine.

Firstly, we will talk about expanding NATO infrastructure in Poland, Romania, and the Baltic countries. Several hundred specialists in the field of intelligence, logistics and planning will be stationed at each of the created facilities. Combat units and equipment can also be stationed there on a rotation basis.

Secondly, the ministers will discuss the formation of a high-readiness joint task force, created on the basis of the NATO response force. The alliance calls this group, which must be able to deploy anywhere in the world within two days, the “tip of the spear.” It is assumed that most of the alliance countries will send their military to it, but so far only Germany, the Netherlands and Norway have announced participation in the project. Jens Stoltenberg said yesterday that the creation of such a unit would “significantly enhance NATO's ability to respond to crises and counter hybrid warfare tactics.” The term “hybrid war” in the alliance refers to Russia’s actions in the Ukrainian direction.

Thirdly, today, as part of a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine commission, four trust funds created by the alliance for military assistance to Kyiv will be officially launched. The money will be used to finance projects in the fields of logistics, command and control, cyber defense, military medicine and rehabilitation of the wounded.

Stoltenberg made it clear that the alliance does not intend to discuss with Russia the issue of Ukraine’s possible entry into NATO: “Ukraine has the right to determine its own future. The era of spheres of influence is over.”.
