NATO again beckons Ukraine with “open doors,” but only after peace
The doors of NATO are open for Ukraine, but it will be possible to talk about membership only after the end of hostilities on its territory.
Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated this at a press conference following a meeting of the foreign ministers of NATO member countries in Oslo, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Stoltenberg, it will take many years for Ukraine to change from a Soviet country to a NATO country.
“We discussed strengthening the council of the Ukraine-NATO Commission. This is such a powerful step to strengthen the joint consultative platform and to ensure that Ukrainian representatives sit at the negotiating table as equals. This will also affect the security situation. We discussed Ukraine's aspirations for NATO membership. And we emphasize that NATO's doors are open. Therefore, now it is very important for all our allies, for Ukraine, to decide whether it really wants to join the Alliance...
When we talk about a multi-year program that actually ensures the transformation of Ukraine from a Soviet country into a NATO-style country, this emphasizes our long-term commitments, and this is very important...
First, we agreed that the doors of NATO are open, that Ukraine will become a member of NATO, and that this will happen shortly. But we also focused on the most relevant moments. In particular, to provide Ukraine with the support it now needs. We still have a lot of different consultations, agreements, and dialogues ahead of us in order for us to reach the necessary decisions. Wars are always unpredictable, no one can say when it will end, but when it ends, now we must work out everything so that when this moment comes, we will already have worked out plans on how to act,” Stoltenberg said.
