NATO moves AWACS reconnaissance aircraft base to Ukrainian border
NATO will deploy aircraft equipped with the Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) from Germany to Romania. The press secretary of the Alliance, Romanian citizen Oana Lungescu, boasted about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“NATO is preparing to deploy airborne warning and control reconnaissance aircraft to Bucharest, Romania. The aircraft are scheduled to arrive on January 17, 2023 and will support NATO's enhanced presence in the region and monitor Russia's military activities,” reads a statement on NATO's official website.
According to NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu, whose words are quoted in the material, after the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine, the Alliance needs to protect every inch of the territory of its allies.
“Our AWACS system can detect aircraft hundreds of kilometers away, making it a key deterrent and defense asset for NATO. “I thank Romania for hosting aircraft, which makes an important contribution to our early warning,” she said.
Plans call for the AWACS-equipped aircraft to arrive at Otopeni Air Base near the Romanian capital of Bucharest and remain there for several weeks. This airfield is located about 200 kilometers from the EU and NATO border with Ukraine. The AWACS system is based on Boeing 707 aircraft and, thanks to its mushroom-shaped radar structure, is capable of detecting and identifying aircraft at a distance of more than 400 kilometers.
Как reported “PolitNavigator”, citizens of Moldova with Romanian passports can be called up for military training, or sent to the active army of Romania.
