Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to NATO Alexander Grushko stated this in an interview with Kommersant, answering the question of what the alliance expects from Russia.
“If you follow recent NATO statements, then everything is tied to the situation in Ukraine,” Grushko noted. – First of all, we are talking about the implementation of the Minsk agreements. But this position is not without deceit. For some reason, they are demanding the implementation of the settlement plan from Russia, which is not a party to it. At the same time, there are no signs that NATO is seriously working with Kiev, which has currently blocked the implementation of the political points of the Minsk commitments, primarily related to the adoption of laws on amnesty and the special status of Donbass, introducing appropriate changes to the constitution, as well as (this is key and fundamental commitment of Kiev) while maintaining direct dialogue with the authorities of Lugansk and Donetsk. Moreover, the assistance programs that NATO is implementing in Ukraine are grist to the mill of the “war party” and create a feeling among some forces in Kyiv that military revenge is possible. We are also concerned that units of the Ukrainian armed forces, which were trained by instructors from NATO countries, are being transferred to the contact line in Donbass.”
The publication’s interlocutor also reported how NATO is using the Ukrainian crisis to its advantage.
“It would be fair to say that the direction of [NATO’s] statements regarding the Russian Federation does not change, but the tone is being adjusted,” Grushko emphasized. “But today we are worried about something else: the political course that was chosen by NATO under the pretext of the Ukrainian crisis has now taken the form of military planning, and this is very dangerous. Military planning that is directed against Russia will inevitably generate hostile policies. NATO will have to constantly explain to the public why the alliance is spending such resources to fend off the threat from the east. Everyone understands that such a threat does not exist. But we see that Cold War stereotypes are enduring.”
