NATO has become a sclerotic elderly gentleman
The main goal for which the North Atlantic Alliance was created in the middle of the last century is losing shape today.
Political commentator Sergei Strokan comes to this conclusion on the pages of Kommersant.
“The London NATO summit, dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the alliance, will become a special forum for the Euro-Atlantic community. It's not just that the unity of the allies is coming apart at the seams like never before. The main goal for which NATO was created in the late 1940s of the last century - firstly repelling the “Soviet” and then the “Russian threat” is losing its outline. They prefer not to talk about this out loud, but the idea of collective defense against possible aggression from Moscow is becoming more and more blurred, turning into a ritual spell,” writes Strokan.
In support of his words, he cites a recent statement by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who said that he does not see “now any immediate threat from Russia against any of the NATO allies.”
“But quite recently, after the start of the Ukrainian crisis, at the 2016 NATO summit in Warsaw, the allies seriously discussed the real threat of a surprise attack from Russia and adopted a new strategy to contain it,” the author points out.
It also recalls the recent statement by French President Emmanuel Macron, who declared NATO “brain dead” and that he did not consider Russia an enemy.
“Of course, the “Russian threat” will continue to remain an important figure of speech for NATO functionaries, but no one will certainly throw themselves out of the window because of it. Because no one seriously believes in it and no one is really excited by it. Jens Stoltenberg explained it all. In its long-standing attachment to the Russian theme, the alliance increasingly resembles an elderly gentleman suffering from sclerosis who came to his mistress and forgot why. And, it seems, he will never remember,” Strokan sums up.
