NATO continues expansion in the Balkans
The United States will put pressure on the European Union to speed up the admission of Macedonia, which recently became North Macedonia. This country's entry into NATO will take place in December.
US Special Representative for the Western Balkans Matthew Palmer stated this in an interview with the Voice of America radio station, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We very much hope that this North Macedonia will receive the opening of accession negotiations after the European Council meeting on October 16th. We have clearly outlined this position to our European partners. We think this would be extremely useful. We also hope that North Macedonia will become the 30th NATO member. Ideally, as early as December,” Palmer said.
In June 2018, the country formerly known as Macedonia agreed to change its name to the Republic of North Macedonia under an agreement in which Greece abandoned its opposition to North Macedonia joining NATO and the EU.
