Showing support for Ukraine, the allies tried to make Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko feel like an honored guest of the summit. The leaders of the five most powerful members of the Alliance - NATO US, UK, Germany, France and Italy - met with Poroshenko to discuss the conflict with Russia. Poroshenko promised to create several trust funds for the modernization of the Ukrainian army with a total amount of about 16 million dollars - an amount no more than symbolic.
However, Poroshenko never received guarantees of arms supplies, nor a commitment that Ukraine has a chance of joining NATO in the future.
The president of the Atlantic Union of Ukraine, Vadim Grechaninov, said that he was disappointed with the alliance’s policy, but foresaw it. If Ukraine joins NATO, each of its members will be bound by treaty to defend it in the event of an attack. But none of the allies is ready for confrontation with Russia's nuclear potential. Grechaninov understands these concerns, but he warns that the alliance is only trying to delay the inevitable.
“Putin can only be stopped by a force greater than that which he possesses. We expected NATO to become this force, and the alliance really has such strength. NATO can stop Putin, but at the moment it does not consider it advisable,” says Grechaninov.
As PolitNavigator reported, yesterday Petro Poroshenko said that Ukraine could receive non-lethal and lethal weapons, including high-precision weapons, from NATO member countries.
